Way back when Sci Fi first announced that they were doing a series based on Flash Gordon, they also announced that they wouldn't be using the Queen theme from the 1980 movie as the show theme. After all, why would they? There was no relation between them. (And from a purely fiscal point of view, it was probably hellaciously expensive.) But then, it seems, there was an outcry from baby boomers everywhere! How could you do Flash Gordon without that song? It would be a travesty! (I assume it was boomers; younger people surely wouldn't care all that much.) And SciFi said, OK, they'd incorporate the theme somehow.

So, you might be wondering, what exactly did SciFi do? Well, their commercials for the show tell you go to louisxiv.net to hear "Flash's Theme", for the group that recorded it, but it doesn't seem to be there yet. Instead, go to the group's MySpace page and click on "Flash's Theme" in the (heh) Flash player to hear the shiny new theme song in all its wonder and glory.

(Purely a side note: I wonder if the group calls themselves Louis the Fourteenth, or Louis Quatorze, or Louis Xiv?)

And, for anyone wondering, the original theme song:

It does look like they've done some interesting things with casting. Granted, the new guy probably won't look as good as Sam Jones in leather shorts. They've also gone an entirely different direction with Ming, who looks, in fact, rather like the guy playing Flash, instead of the whole vaguely Asian terror thing that they did with Klaus Kinski and previous Mings. (Previous The Mercilesses? Whatever.) All the women in Flash's life do look oddly similar, though.
