ICv2 News - Sarah Paulson Joins 'The Spirit' Cast:

September 25, 2007

According to The Hollywood Reporter, actress Sarah Paulson (Studio 60) has joined the cast of Frank Miller's movie adaptation of Will Eisner's The Spirit. She will portray Dr. Ellen Doyle, the police commissioner's daughter and The Spirit's true love. She joins fellow stunners Eva Mendes and Scarlett Johansson, who unlike Paulson, will play femme fatales in Miller's film. Shooting starts in October at Albuquerque studios in New Mexico. Veteran character actor Dan Lauria (The Wonder Years) has also joined the cast along with Canadian actress Stana Katic, who will portray the rookie cop Morgenstern. Lauria will take on the key role of Commissioner Dolan, while Johnny Simmons will play the young Denny Colt and Louis Lombardi (The Sopranos) will portray Phobos, one of the Octopus's chief henchmen.

You know ... here's the thing. Except for Scarlett Johansson as Silk. N. Floss -- and, you know, the whole retooled concept for Silken Floss, including misspelling her name, fer cryin' out loud -- it's actually not badly cast. The people are mostly right for the roles. (And if they'd left Floss even one of her advanced degrees, I wouldn't even be kicking about that. But then, where would she find the time to train to be the world's finest prostitute cum assassin around all that formal schooling?)

But ... Albuquerque? Really? Standing in for New York? I'm guessing that this movie is mostly interiors, then, and it could be AnyTown USA, because ... really, Albuquerque playing the part of New York just doesn't work at any level. I guess labor costs at Albuquerque Studios are considerable cheaper than those in NYC or Los Angeles.
