Girls #5.

Girls by the Luna Brothers is an interesting little sci-fi horrorish sort of tale. And after Ultra, which I enjoyed immensely, I was looking forward to a good story from them, and I will say that I haven't been disappointed.

That said, when I saw the last page of Girls #5 ... I laughed myself sick.

As I was intended to do, I'm pretty sure. You don't stick an image like that on the last page of an issue without expecting a certain set of reactions, such as (1) dropped jaws, (2) people thinking, "Oh, they did NOT just do that!" and (3) once it sinks in that, yes, they DID just do that, fits of hysterical laughter that go on and on and make people on the train with you wonder just who the crazy guy in the back is. (...OK, perhaps that bit with the train is just me.)

What I'm looking forward to seeing next issue is whether or not the characters realize what they're seeing. We the reader got a view that the characters couldn't possibly have had, so depending on a few factors, they may not know what it is they're seeing. (Although I kind of suspect they do, because what is the point otherwise?)

(Purely a side note: I just wonder if, while they were doing Ultra and pondering their next project, the Luna Brothers might have been inspired by David Bowie's "Girls". Because, seriously, it fits that story, in a slightly twisted way. The song is melancholy, rather than horrific, but the sentiment is kind of right anyway.

Girls
Written by - David Bowie & Erdal Kizilcay

They come and they go
They kiss
Come and they go
Like breeze
Brushing my cheek
Like pain
Like the tears on my face

Girls
They come and they go
Like spirits
They vanish at dawn
My heart
Suspended in time
Like you
Vanish like tears in the rain

Girls
They take their loves away
Like spirits
Living so far away

Girls
Pretending to break down and cry
Girls
Whispering wind
What are they giving away

We used to be so happy
Remember, remember
So happy
I never knew
How lonely
How lonely
How lonely I could feel

Girls
They come and they go
They kiss
They come and they go
Like spirits
Brushing my cheek
Like pain
Like the tears on my face

Girls
They take their loves away
Like spirits
Living so far away

Girls
Pretending to break down and cry
Girls
Whispering wind
What are they giving away
We used to be so happy
Remember, remember
So happy
I never knew
How lonely
How lonely
How lonely I could feel
Girls

Actually, I like Tina Turner's cover a little better than the original, even though it doesn't make the slightest sense to actually have an actual, like, girl singing the song.)
