Grim Amusements / 24 June 2011 / "New York says yea"

...It will be interesting to see what the effect of this is, and how long it lasts. How long will it be before some conservative organization challenges the law in court? (At the moment, New York does not have an initiative and referendum process, although the Senate approved the draft law this very session, only two weeks ago.[...])

... But still. New York said yea. And that's something, for today.

I haven't seen anything about a voter-generated ballot initiative in New York. There are constitutional amendments voted on all the time, but they are proposed by the legislature. I'm not saying it couldn't happen, just that I haven't seen anything about it, and I tend to pay attention to that sort of thing.

I'm also no worried about any law suits. Sure, someone might file a law suit (anyone can sue anyone, any time for any reason), but it would get bounced out of court very fast. Recall that New York's top court held 4-3 that marriage equality was an issue for the legislature (the three dissenters said the court should have authorized it). With that history, there's no way an anti-marriage suit could succeed.
